FRIDAY, APRIL 22nd
  1. Due by FRIDAY, APRIL 22nd (before midnight): in this last week of the semester, I hope to remind all of you that archaeology is not just Indiana Jones and treasure hunting. In fact, archaeology is intimately related to the identities that modern populations construct and current political affairs (perhaps moreso than you realized before watching the video earlier this semester on Nazi "archaeology"... or reading about the Buddhas of Bamiyan). The sites of Great Zimbabwe and Ozette are excellent additional examples; watch the videos below to learn more.
  1. Due by FRIDAY, APRIL 22nd (before midnight): in the US, cultural sites and and archaeological remains have been directly affected by how the federal government has chosen to interact with indigenous populations and/or tribal nations. FRIDAY, APRIL 15th
  1. Due by FRIDAY, APRIL 15th (before midnight): we have now ventured into some of the first civilizations (or cultures demonstrating "state-level" complexity). However, it's important to remember, that cultural evolution is not directional. In other words, not all cultures were evolving in the same way in terms of complexity, nor were they bound to reach the same Western conception of civilization. The Lapita and Nok cultures are excellent examples of cultures that evolved around 3,000 years ago, thrived in their own ways, and yet would not be categorized as civilizations. Watch the two videos below to learn more, and then complete the linked form for your Daily Activity points!

  1. Due by TUESDAY, APRIL 12th (before midnight): we only have a couple more thematic units to cover before the end of the 8-week semester! The next topic we'll review will be the evidence for downfall/collapse of ancient societies. Many people believe that one of the most important objectives of archaeologists is to study the past so that we can make changes in the future that will improve the quality of humans' lives. In today's Daily Activity, you will begin to synthesize hypotheses and evidence of some of the sites/cultures we've studied in the World Prehistory Project regarding collapse. We have now amassed an impressive amount of information in our free, interactive WPP database that you should be drawing from as we continue to explore different aspects of human prehistory. Fill out the Daily Activity form to complete the introductory work on our collapse topic.
