ANT 104: WPP ESSAY GRADING CRITERIA
All essays will be graded on the same criteria: CONTENT and STYLE. The CONTENT grading will constitute 64%
of the overall essay grade. The STYLE grading will constitute 36% of the overall essay grade. For more information

ANT 104: CONTENT GUIDELINES
- WHO? (16 points)

A perfect score in this category will be awarded to any essay that clearly describes the
population(s) or culture(s) associated with the site, the most important archaeological
remains they left behind, and what we know about their lifestyle (diet, biology, economy,
technology, politics, spirituality/religion, art/communication). Contextual information
is given for other population(s) that may be relevant either geographically or temporally.
- WHERE? (16 points)

A perfect score in this category will be awarded to any essay that clearly indicates the
location of the site both in modern (political) and ancient context. The essay must also
offer an excellent synopsis of the environmental or ecological context of the site.
- WHEN? (16 points)

A perfect score in this category will be awarded to any essay that clearly describes the
chronology of the site and contextualizes the site within the broader chronology of the region.
- WHY? (16 points)

A perfect score in this category will be awarded to any essay that offers a clear and enlightening
explanation of why this particular site plays a significant role within the region, the time period,
and world history in terms of human culture and evolution.
ANT 104: STYLE GUIDELINES
- PUNCTUATION & SPELLING (12 points)

A perfect score in this category will be awarded to any essay that contains no spelling or
punctuation errors. The essay has obviously been proofread and edited to eliminate all typographical
mistakes.
- ORGANIZATION (12 points)

A perfect score in this category will be awarded to any essay in which the author clearly organized
her/his thoughts so that the information flows logically. The essay is divided into paragraphs
appropriately.
- REFERENCES (12 points)

A perfect score in this category will be awarded to an author who does an excellent job of citing
high-quality references when presenting facts and detailed information. Both in-line and
end-of-text references are formatted appropriately.
- PLAGIARISM (assignment receives 0 points total)

NO - The author has used her/his own words and formed her/his own ideas. There are no signs of plagiarism.

YES - The author has used someone else's words inappropriately. This includes any quotations of more than
just a couple words.
