ANT 104: CONTENT GUIDELINES
Three new archaeological sites/cultures will be posted to our World
Prehistory Project for each "phase" (Tuesdays and Fridays). Each one of these sites/cultures will be summarized by
two different students. All essays will be evaluated using the
following standardized system for CONTENT for a possible total of 64 points:
- WHO? (16 points)
- A perfect score in this category will be awarded to any essay
that clearly describes the population(s) or culture(s) associated
with the site, the most important archaeological remains they left
behind, and what we know about their lifestyle
(diet, biology, economy, technology, politics, spirituality/religion, art/communication).
Contextual information is given for other population(s) that may be relevant either geographically
or temporally.
- WHERE? (16 points)
- A perfect score in this category will be awarded to any essay
that clearly indicates the location of the site both in modern (political)
and ancient context. The essay must also offer an excellent synopsis
of the environmental or ecological context of the site.
- WHEN? (16 points)
- A perfect score in this category will be awarded to any essay
that clearly describes the chronology of the site and contextualizes
the site within the broader chronology of the region.
- WHY? (16 points)
- A perfect score in this category will be awarded to any essay
that offers a clear and enlightening explanation of why this particular
site plays a significant role within the region, the time period,
and world history in terms of human culture and evolution.
